Native Healing

Native Healing

Native healing is the ability of a plant or animal to cure its own injuries or illness. It’s not just a matter of plants being more natural than pharmaceuticals; plants can heal our bodies naturally, while drugs only address symptoms and don’t address the root cause. With native healing, your body heals itself because it can use its resources.

Traditional healing refers to the health practices, approaches, knowledge, and beliefs that incorporate First Nations healing and wellness. These practices include using ceremonies, plant, animal, or mineral-based medicines, energetic therapies, and physical or hands-on techniques.

What is a Native American ritual for healing?

Another practice of Native American healing, symbolic healing rituals, can involve whole communities. These ceremonies can include chanting, singing, painting bodies, dancing, exorcisms, sand paintings, and even limited use of mind-altering substances. All this is done to promote the healing of the sick.

What is an example of traditional healing?

Traditional healing practices include not only medicinal substances of natural origin but also items like magic (sorcery), charms, incantations, religious verses, spiritual methods, amulets, sacrifices, rituals, and even invasive physical and mental torture [6].
Beliefs and tradition Sangomas are called to heal, and through them, it is believed that ancestors from the spirit world can give instruction and advice to heal illness, social disharmony and spiritual difficulties. Traditional healers work in a sacred healing hut or indumba, where they believe their ancestors reside.

What powers does a sangoma have?

Highly skilled sangomas are said to be able to make herbal medicines, interpret dreams, incorporate spirits, control weather, and predict the future.
Tobacco was the first plant that the Creator gave to Native people. It is the main activator of all the plant spirits. Three other plants, sage, cedar, and sweetgrass, follow tobacco, and together they are referred to as the four sacred medicines.
